A cohesive and well thought-out room will always have a focal point – the one that you see as soon as you enter. It could be anything – maybe a fireplace in your living room or a certain artwork in the hallway. Hence, regardless of how noteworthy that focal point is, it is also important that the rest of the décor blends in seamlessly with that focal point. So, to make the process simpler for you, here is How to Design Around a Focal Point
Draw in the Color Palette
First and foremost, it is important to draw in the color palette of your space. Whether it is an eye-catchy wallpaper, or toss pillows and contrasting artwork, it is crucial that you align them with the focal point of your space!
Remember, they should interact with each other cohesively! For instance, if your focal is the large blue artwork behind the sofa in your living room, then you need to make sure that you add tints of that color in your furniture upholstery, accent pillows, and decorative accents.
Add Neutrals
Too much focus on the color palette is not appealing to the eyes! And that is why you must break it by adding some neutrals and bases to create a subtle tie-in effect.
You can achieve this by simply painting the walls in muted tones and adding décor elements that would break the monotony such as, tinted metals or brass tones. For example, with the same blue artwork behind the sofa, you can add subtle neutrals like off-white, beiges, lighter greys, and creamy tones to break that uniform cycle.
Play with Contrasts
Furthermore, you need to ensure that you play with a contrasting color in parallel with the focal one. Let’s say, the room majorly constitutes of blues and whites now – it is time to incorporate a contrast – like mustard yellows in the form of contrasting vases, trays, pillows, wall art, and window curtains to further refine the palette.
Now that you know how to design around a focal point, you must note that too much of everything is not good! Hence, in case if you have existing colors in your space – try to amalgamate them with new modern tones to create a sophisticated, balanced appearance.
